“Candy Says” to jeden z utworów albumu o nazwie „The Velvet Underground” zespołu… The Velvet Underground. Album nagrywany był w drugiej połowie roku 1968, do sprzedaży trafił w marcu 1969. Piosenka napisała została przez Lou Reed’a, zaśpiewał ją Doug Yule (członek zespołu). „Candy Says” odnosi się bezpośrednio do transseksualnej Candy Darling, opowiadając o doświadczeniach kobiety transseksualnej, która zmaga się z faktem nie zrodzenia się fizycznie kobietą. Utwór jest pierwszą piosenką na płycie, trwa 4:04 min.

Poniżej ostatnie znane zdjęcie żywej Candy Darling w towarzystwie matki, z roku 1973 (autorstwo Sheyla Baykal) w szpitalu. Matka po śmierci Candy zniszczyła wiele przedmiotów należących do niej.

Inną piosenką w której Lou Reed odnosi się m.in. do Candy Darling, jest „Walk on the Wild Side” z albumu „Transformer” (1972 r.) – największy sukces komercyjny muzyka.

W drugim albumie zespołu, “White Light/White Heat” (1968), znalazła się inna piosenka odnosząca się do kobiety transseksualnej, która ma przejść waginoplastykę, jej tytuł to „Lady Godiva's Operation” – śpiewają John Cale i Lou Reed, z tekstu piosenki wynika, że operacja była nieudana, przy tym Lou Reed, który śpiewa drugą połowę, podchodzi do zabiegu waginoplastyki z przymrużeniem oka, w zasadzie nabijając się z operacji.

Lou Reed (1942 - 2013), który po pewnym czasie postawił na życie według typowych norm – czyli udawał heteryka, w latach 70-tych XX w. był związany przez około 3 lata (w okresie 1974 - 1977) z Rachel Humphreys (1952 – 30 styczeń 1990, zmarła na AIDS, jej ciała nikt nie odebrał, pochowano ją na cmentarzu dla tzw. "bezimiennych", bezdomnych, itd.) która prawdopodobnie była transseksualna. Reed cenił sobie w niej to, że nie była po waginoplastyce, a gdy przymierzała się aby ją przejść (choć nie ma świadectwa że miała na operację środki) – zarzucał jej że nie myśli o jego „potrzebach” – typowe podejście „shemaloloverów”. Rachel inspirowała muzyka szczególnie podczas tworzenia materiału do albumu „Street Hassle” z 1978 r.
